AMMAN, May 27th, 2019 – The EU-funded project “EU Support to Jordanian Democratic Institutions & Development – EU-JDID’’ held its fourth steering committee meeting for the “Support to Political Parties System” component on Monday, 27th of May, at the Ministry of Parliamentary and Political Affairs (MoPPA).

 

MoPPA Secretary General, H.E. Dr. Ali Al Khawaldeh, inaugurated the meeting by voicing his appreciation for the project’s cooperation with the ministry, as well as that of the European Union Delegation (EUD) to Jordan.

 

He reaffirmed the importance of supporting the political party system and the development of an inclusive political dialogue in order to ‘‘contribute to the democratic governance in Jordan, with a specific focus on women and youth’’.

 

EUD Head of Cooperation, Mrs. Corinne Andre also praised the ‘‘prolific’’ cooperation, saying ‘‘We [the EU] are glad to see the progress of this project and the activities implemented as they work towards supporting democracy, human rights and the rule of law, which are of priority to the EUD.’’

 

She commended the support to Jordan’s efforts towards political reform, reasserting the EU’s support, through the EU-JDID project, to the implementation of the Alnahda Plan. Mrs Andre outlined the work done with political parties and civil society organizations, with a special focus on youth and women.

 

For his part, Mr. Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira, EU-JDID Programme Coordinator stressed the importance of supporting political parties to ‘‘best achieve the vision of the political reform process in Jordan’’.

 

Representative of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD), Mrs Reem Judeh, noted that the work of the EU-JDID’s third component focuses on three main pillars : capacity building for MoPPA staff, capacity building for male and female youth, and  ways to create synergies with other national institutions and beneficiaries.

 

She highlighted the wide range of activities conducted to support the ministry in its efforts to enhance democracy, a point supported by Eng. Mr. Rami Edwan, NIMD Country Representative, who introduced the achievements recorded in the last period.
