Voter Education Outreaches at LGAs in Imo, Osun and FCT – November 2018 - February 2019

As the general election drew close, members of the Voter education CDS group conducted outreaches in secondary schools, community centres, sports events market and religious institutions. The CDS groups sensitised their peers on how to meaningfully participate in elections by disseminating information on how to register to vote, how to get information about the platforms of specific candidates and political parties; and encouraging them to vote in the general elections. Outreaches were conducted in all the area councils of the FCT, all the local government of Osun state and 20 local governments in Imo state.

Corps members were equipped with information and communication materials such as t-shirts, fliers, posters, handbooks and training manuals. Using such methods as community dialogue, town hall meetings and rallies to get relevant voter education messages across to their communities, Corps members were able to engage their peers such issues as, making their votes count, voter registration process, process and places for collecting permanent voters’ cards, voting in a well-informed way and refusing inducement to either sell or buy votes.

An example of some of the strategies used was the FCT Voter Education CDS group Rally which held in Wuse market on the 23rd of November 2018. Materials with tagline messages like ‘Vote not Fight’, ‘Don’t Sell your Vote’, ‘No to Electoral Violence’, and explanations on how to collect the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) and voting procedures were effectively circulated targeting the underrepresented groups.
